MORGAN MARS

NICHOLAS POV

Aknock at the front door caused my next words to die on my lips. I wanted out of this conversation. I wanted out of reciting all the horrible things I had seen through my Domain. Whatever the Peacekeepers had done to numb me to the horrors of what I’d witnessed only worked when I wasn’t thinking about it or while I was in the Game. Now that I was outside the Game and not distracted, it was catching up with me.

Pan and I both frowned at the same time.

We were still in the sitting room and had a clear view of a section of the cobblestone path which led to my front door. Neither of us spotted anyone walking down it, and we were both confused as to where the knock came from.

“Do you mind asking whoever is at the door to go away?” Pan asked. “This discussion is important for your mental health.”

I spread my Domain through the manor and blinked, momentarily stunned. I recognised the man standing at my door from all the interviews and pictures I’d seen of him. He was the most well-known man on the planet.

“It’s Morgan Mars,” I whispered.

Pan didn’t react the way I expected. “Is he a friend of yours?”

“No.”

“Ask him to come back later then.”

A small flash of anger surged through me, showing images of my elderly mother fading away. “I owe that man more than I can ever repay. I am not going to ask him to come back later.”

I pushed myself out of my armchair and marched to the entrance. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves and then opened the door. Standing on my cobblestone path was Morgan Mars. The man who had given me back my mother. The man who had given us back our health and youth.

He was six foot three with light brown hair and a deep tan. I had to look up to meet his gaze. He had a rough face, not quite handsome, but not ugly, mostly because of his squashed nose. He wore a cheap navy-blue suit but still looked larger than life to me. All sorts of emotions began to leak through as my anger faded.

He smiled and offered me his hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Nicholas.”

“It’s nice to meet me too. I mean you.” I took his hand and shook. “You know my name?” I was too shocked to be embarrassed about stumbling over my words.

“I make it my business to know all the major players in the Game. I’m sorry to intrude on your free time, but I was wondering if you would be open to a proposal.”

The emotions held back by a dam of anger and self-restraint suddenly spilled free.

“Thank you for what you did,” I said, tearing up as feelings I couldn’t express rushed through me. “You don’t know what you did for me. My mother had Alzheimer's. Late stage. She was so sick. There was nothing the doctors-”

I lost control, collapsing into a blubbering mess.
